Brontide® natural butylene glycol

A sustainable solvent that improves fragrance performance

Brontide natural butylene glycol

A new, sustainable natural diluent.

Brontide provides a clearer and more uninhibited reveal of fragrance notes in more polar ingredients.

Brontide natural butylene glycol is a new, sustainable and natural diluent that provides a clearer and more uninhibited reveal of fragrance notes with polar ingredients.

In a comparison of currently used diluent systems, Brontide natural butylene glycol showed an improvement of fragrance note strength in polar ingredients, maintaining the true to character perception of the added ingredient.

Study in Brief

Geno engaged MOCA fragrances (experienced perfumers) to conduct a study of 105 common fragrance ingredients and 4 diluents to test compatibility and conduct organoleptic blotter evaluations. Each ingredient and diluent were evaluated at multiple dilutions, testing for solubility and comparable odor performance during wet and dry-down periods. This generated more than 1200 data points to derive conclusions.

Brontide can increase the value of a fragrance

Brontide natural butylene glycol can provide a more predictable outcome from formulation to compounding when adding new materials to fragrance.

Solubility of 105 common fragrance ingredients diluted in Brontide was visually inspected, given rating of (1) poor, (2) moderate, (3) good, (4) excellent. Organoleptic performance was given a rating of (1) poor to (10) excellent.

Brontide had a superior organoleptic rating to other diluents tested for fragrance expression where ingredients have a solubility observation of excellent.

Predictable Solubility Performance

Brontide butylene glycol performs best where ingredients have lower molecular weight and lower logP values

Solubility of 105 common fragrance ingredients diluted in Brontide was visually inspected, given rating of (1) poor, (2) moderate, (3) good, (4) excellent. Organoleptic performance was given a rating of (1) poor to (10) excellent.

Brontide butylene glycol performs best where ingredients have lower molecular weight and lower logP values

Statistical regression analysis of 105 ingredients in Brontide natural butylene glycol showed logP and molecular weight explain >99.9% of the variability in solubility with Brontide and fragrance ingredients.

Brontide natural butylene glycol demonstrated consistent and strong solubility performance with more polar categories of ingredients, with less consistent solubility performance in the less polar category.

Brontide natural butylene glycol is expected to perform best when operating as a co-solvent in formulations with a full-spectrum of polar and non-polar ingredients, allowing for a more comprehensive solubility performance.

Brontide is skin-safe and non-irritating

Brontide natural butylene glycol has been tested at levels up to 40% in a human repeat insult patch test
and resulted in no instances of irritation, sensitization or allergic reaction.

Preservative-boosting performance

Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) testing has shown that Brontide natural butylene glycol can play a significant role in contamination prevention in solutions and formulations. Brontide has been shown to completely inhibit microbial growth for the following microorganisms at the concentrations highlighted:

Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests indicate Brontide natural butylene glycol has an increased ability to inhibit microbial growth compared to 1,3 PDO and glycerin.

Brontide can play a role in preservative efforts.
